Leitura e participação em sala de aula: um estudo sobre práticas de letramentos acadêmicos de pós-graduandos surdos

Following the democratization of higher education, members of minority groups, such as deaf students, began to occupy spaces in universities, leading to demands regarding linguistic and cultural specificities of these individuals in their participation in reading and writing practices. Therefore, this research thematizes the academic literacy practices of deaf postgraduate students and aims to understand these practices in a postgraduate classroom at a public university and the meanings constructed about them by the group members. To this end, in theoretical methodological terms, I base myself on the New Literacy Studies (Heath, 1983; Barton; Hamilton, 1998; Castanheira; Green; Dixon, 2007; Street, 2014), with a focus on academic literacies (Lea; Street, 1998; Lea, 1999; Lillis; Scott, 2007) and the literacy of deaf people (Silva, 2010; Ribeiro, 2016; Rocha, 2021; Fernandes, 2022), using an ethnographic perspective (Green; Bloome, 1997; Green; Dixon; Zaharlick, 2005; Street, 2008). In addition, I explore theoretical reflections on language and reading (Gnerre, 1991; Freire, 1989; 2022; Bakhtin, 2016; Volóchinov, 2021) and studies of bilingualism (Grosjean, 1998; 2008; Cavalcanti, 1999; García, 2009) and bilingual education for the deaf (Fernandes, 2003; Fernandes; Moreira, 2009; Reagan, 2015; Silva, 2018; Megale; El Kadri, 2023), as well as affiliating myself with a sociocultural perspective on deafness (Skliar, 1997; Strobel, 2008; Rezende, 2012). Based on this referential, I carried out a participant observation (Spradley, 1980) in an inclusive stricto sensu postgraduate classroom at a Brazilian public university, made up of a majority of hearing students and four deaf signaling ones, in the first semester of 2024, using field notes, video footage, photographs, collection of printed artifacts and interviews with the deaf students, the teacher, and the two Libras interpreters.
