Atos de ameaça à face: : uma análise de entrevistas com usuários de Libras sob a perspectiva da teoria da polidez

When considered in terms of functionality, language provides a variety of semiotic possibilities to its users, allowing them to make linguistic choices that best serve their communicative purposes and intentions during an interaction. These linguistic choices generate specific meaning constructions that can result in different effects and reactions in the communicative process, depending on the context, social and cultural values, and the participants' experiences (HALLIDAY, 1994).The objective of this study is to investigate the interactions between users of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) through mediated interviews, identifying which resources for face preservation and repair are used by participants when confronted with explicit and emphatic acts that threaten face. This qualitative and applied research is based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Politeness Theory (BROWN; LEVINSON, 1987) and Systemic-Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1994). Although the participants behave linguistically differently in each analyzed situation, they tend to intensify the use of signaling resources for modality and positive politeness devices when performing repair actions, in order to mitigate the effects of face-threatening acts. They employ strategies to establish a balance of social position among participants or to maintain cooperation and continuity of interaction.In summary, this study explores how users of Brazilian Sign Language use various linguistic resources to maintain positive face during interactions and repair any potential threats to face. The participants adapt their communication strategies to preserve the social harmony and cooperation within the conversation.
