Vozes silenciosas: os surdos como grupo social subalterno e a igreja como agente de inclusão

The research ‘Silent voices: the deaf as a social group subaltern and the church as an agent of inclusion', the aim is to expand the academic dialogue on the issue of deaf subalternity, contributing to greater awareness and sensitivity in relation to the unique needs and experiences of this community. By highlighting the silent voices of deaf people, we seek to promote positive and meaningful change towards a more inclusive and fair society for all. The justification is based on the relevance of understanding the experiences of deaf people as a social group, as well as its potential importance in identifying strategies to promote the inclusion and empowerment of this community. It is important to reflect on the reality of deaf people, who, despite existing in various parts of Brazil, are still made invisible, stigmatized and marginalized by society. We don't often find them in social places, such as schools, universities, cinemas, clubs, among other spaces. Over time, this group faced numerous obstacles to be recognized as subjects of rights, with their capabilities recognized. Public policies implemented in recent decades have been an attempt to meet these needs, which have been neglected for a long time. The promulgation of Law No. 10,436 of 2002 recognizes Libras as a legal means of communication and expression, making its adoption mandatory. These are fundamental initiatives to promote dignity for these people, in the search for inclusion and visibility. Currently, the city of Dourados in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul has the Brazilian Sign Language Interpretation Center (CIL), a Federal Government project, linked to the National Secretariat for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Secretariat of Human rights.
