Resumo
It is indisputable the fact that learning a language brings many benefits to the learner. Spoken and sign languages can bring different benefits, precisely because they are different language modalities. With that in mind, the present work aims to investigate the importance and effects of hearing children within the autistic spectrum learning sign language, since they are very visual, and many have difficulty in acquiring spoken language. The use of sign language is also an attempt to help in the subsequent acquisition of the mother tongue (oral), that is, the main purpose is to allow a better development in language that automatically increases access to social environments, generates independence, linguistic and cognitive development. The research was based on the scarce but already existing bibliographic repertoire of the area. The main references are Quadros and Pizzio (2011), regarding the process of acquisition of sign language by hearing children, and the case studies of Sales and Antonio (2014) and Scheuermann and Webber (2001) regarding the teaching of sign language for non-verbal autistic people. In addition, part of the methodology of this research was the application of forms and an experience in a case study. With this, it can be concluded that there are positive results, but there is still more to study on the subject since the analysis group is very small and autistic people are an extremely heterogeneous group of learners.
